My relationship with a natural world would be a good as I walk my dog every now and then and I walk to school everyday allowing me to see many different landscapes. To be able to see a landscape I could take a walk to my nearest park or walk around my neighbourhood and see many different kind of landscapes. I believe people take images of landscapes to be able to show the beauty of things that people would go past and think nothing of it, or to be able to document how the landscape changes over the years. Photographs would definitely be able to change peoples perspectives of landscapes as it can allow people to look at the landscape for a long time and from another persons perspective of it allowing us to see things we may not have seen ourselves. A landscape picture is an image that allows you to catch the scenery and beauty of outside. The images allow the viewer to feel as though they are in real life it captures the beauty, mood and setting in the location.
Landscape images normally have; daylight, natural features of land, sky, and waters at a distance. Rarely landscape images would also involve a subject in a scenic setting which could be nearby, up close, and maybe sometimes at night. When I hear the word landscape in my minds eye I am able to see, a long wide field with a few horses or cows dotted around or rivers and lakes covered in moss and guarded by trees. Some words I think about when I think of landscapes would be, greenery, trees, animals, space, rivers, flowers, sky, clouds, beauty, open, peaceful, mew life, nature, seasonal, clear, color , developments, lakes, moss, natural light. If I search the word landscape the images I am presented with are mountains or hills behind a lake laced with trees on the sides and the sunset in the distance. there are also some images of roads and the clouds in all different shapes with the sky in a variety of colours.
My ideal landscape would be an open and empty field with a single tree and pearly white clouds swarming in the sky. As I look out of the classroom window I can see, the back part of a building and a lot of trees and bushes with white flowers sprouting from them. There is also a concrete path with grass on either side. In the distance behind the trees I can see the roof of a house covered in vines. In the past I took an image of the sky on my way home. It was a rainy day but as I was walking home I noticed that the sky was two completely different colours one side was grey and gloomy while the other side was a really bright blue as if the day was a nice day and was sunny. I took the image as I had never seen anything like this before and thought it was really unique.

ARTIST RESEARCH: Dafna Talmor
In this image I am able to see a beach with lots of rocky hills and parts of the sea being misplaced. I would use words like unique and strange to describe this image. If I were to describe this image to someone who isn't able to see it I would say it was taken from the beginning of the sand on the beach where there would be cliffs and hills, it seems that the artist has cut big bits out of the image and placed them somewhere where they shouldn't be it also looks as if the artist has burnt the edges of each part of the image to give it an old and strange look. This image would be naturalistic as you are able to tell what the subject is. The artist has taken an image of a landscape used the film with the images on and cut parts out and either removed them completely or move them to a different part on the image. This may affect the way we view the image as as it would make us wonder why has she decided to move that piece to that place or what's missing was it a person or empty space? This image reminds me of multiple memories of a nice place all put into one as there are many things overlapping each other. The lines in this image make me see it as either stained glass or an image being burnt. The colours in this image are quite dim and dull. The photographer has decided to make the contrast of the image brighter as there are many blacked out parts in the image and the image its dull itself so if the artist didn't make it brighter then you wouldn't be able to see the image very well. The image is different from real life as if you were to go to a beach you wouldn't be able to see the sea in the sky parts of the beach wouldn't be missing and there wouldn't see a cliff onto of another cliff. The thing that interested me the most about this image is wondering why the artist decided to have like a burnt look on each part that she has decided to construct.
Response to Dafna Talmor's Constructed Landscapes
I really like Dafna Talmor work as she has no limitations to what she could do and makes really interesting as she puts multiple different images into one and creates many interesting pieces. The things I took away from the film was that there are endless possibilities, it is like an autobiagraphal connection, you can pick your idealised position of everything, you can embed different perspectives of an image onto one frame and you can have a disorientating effect. I deconstructed my slides as I wanted to change the colours of most of the things in the image as I thought I could create a very strange image. We had to choose the images we like the most and we had to choose which parts of it we wanted to change and if we wanted to add things what we wanted the we get coloured film and cello-tape.
My landscape images
As I was taking these images I made sure to stick with the the kind of landscape that I like I made sure to keep a lot of greenery and trees and the day i chose to take these images was really good as it was a hot day meaning the landscapes had a lot of natural light.
The Idea of Landscape:
The valley of the shadow of death- Roger Fenton
In this image the artist has decided to show a dull, empty land leaving out any existence of life. I believe that the artist has decided to show this image as it could represent how he feels those feelings being lost, empty or lonely. The image is taken from a distant mid-point which could depict the meaning of looking forward to the end of the road as there is a path that the artist could walk down.
UNTITLED (Cowboy)- Richard Prince
In this image the artist has decided to show a dull yet bright image of a man on a horse riding freely in a desert. This image could show a memory of the artist watching their parent in the distance or could be someone they came across while travelling. This image could depict the feeling of being free yet feeling lonely.
DIONNE LEE'S CONSTRUCTED LANDSCAPES
The artist took images from a magazine with different landscape images there were images of the sky, land and some had water in it. The artist mostly used her hands to rip the images apart to make it to her liking she would occasionally use scissors to get certain cuts as she may have wanted more cleaner and hidden sides rather than messy sides that can be seen. The artist placed many different pictures on top of each other after she tore things apart she would put smaller images on top of the bigger ones or sometimes hiding them behind the larger ones, she would change her mind many times moving around images to a position that she liked. Once she was finished with one image she would move it to the side and create a new one adding in old pictures she used or removing ones she didn't like very much.
Evaluation of my work
In my images I stuck with a theme of a vibrant background and dull things added on I think that I could switch things up and add vibrant on vibrant dull on dull or dull background and vibrant accents. I like that I tried to make things that went well with each other but I would like to just put random things on top of each other so it doesn't look so neat. Something I would also like to do is either use my hands moving images around or someone else help me to be able to show the process of my work. With my images I could try and rip the images up and get a ragged edge instead of clean cuts and i could also try folding things incase I want to use them again.
Artist research: Hiroshi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a well know photographer for his black and white image. He uses a large format view camera and works in a traditional wet darkroom. Sugimoto got inspired from Marcel Duchamp's work he also is interested in contemporary architecture. Even from a young age he was taking images he started off with trains and actors. Sugimoto blurs his bulidings as he wanted to highlight the outlines of the buildings.

MINIMALIST LANDSCAPES:what remains
Liz Nielsen- gardening with you- 2020 Geraldo de Barros- from the series sobras- 1996
In the first image I can see a lot of think and thin lines creating shapes of what I would say to be a bush or a tree and to the side of it a fence or a chair other people may see different things. On the second image I can see a tree that has had the surroundings cut out and the holes that would be in the tree have also been cut out making all the cut out bits black leaving only the tree. One thing I find unusual about the first picture is the fact the artist decided not to give much depth to the image and cut out most things allowing the person looking at it to make up what they think they can see, another thing would be why they decided to add the ovals in the bush is it supposed to represent something? In the second image the thing I find unusual would be why did the artist decided to cut everything but the tree out why did they focus on a tree why are there bits off the tree cut out? When I look at the first picture I really like it as I am able to come up with many different things of what it could be like it could be a camp fire and a person is around it roasting marshmallows or its a tree surrounded by a fence or a gardener just planted a new tree and they are holding a shovel and admiring their work different people see different things and I really like that about this image. However, when I look at the second image I feel a little disappointed as its a little too plain for me and I don't understand why the artist decided to do it why are there parts cut out whats the reason for any of it it all just seems very plain to me If I was to make an image like this I would follow what the first artist did and use little paper as I can to create something that people can make up what they see it will still look like a landscape but I want different people to have different stories for it. I think the first artist decided to cut out most of the image as they wanted to see how much they could take away for it to still be able to be seen as a landscape they wanted to test the limits of what out brains can identify as a landscape. in the second image i think that the artist decided to cut everything but the tree to show that when most people hear landscape they immediately think of trees and i think they decoded to cut out parts in the tree to shoe the gaps that the branches make sometimes. The picture i prefer would be the first one as i like that i can create what i think the image is and there is a lot more to look at in the image whereas in the other image its very plain so its not very enjoyable.
My landscape image
My positives
In creating these images I did not fully have a plan of what I wanted I knew I wanted to put what I thought of when I heard landscapes like trees and clouds and bushes but I didn’t really know how to portray that. In creating the second image I wanted to make it look like a paint can had spilled onto the paper and magically made an image as thats how I wish things could be instead of having to spend a really long time creating images.
We put our landscape collages onto light sensitive photographic paper and shined a light through transferring our images after ten seconds under the light we took the transferred image and put it inside some developer for a minute then putting it straight into stop for a few seconds then onto fix for about five minutes lastly into wash to get all the chemicals off of the image. Whilst the first image was in the fix we then went and used the original image and made another transfer on light sensitive photographic paper then taking it to a different station and using paintbrushes of different types and some developer to create our image how we wanted we could make shapes splash the developer on or paint it on how we wanted and then followed the same process as before of stop fix and wash.
I think my images worked well I like how they came out especially the second one it looks exactly how I wanted it to. I think if i were to do this again I would try to add a few more things in the background and fill up quite a bit of space and have a full plan of how I would like it to look.I would like to try and create landscapes in a different view from what i think of it something more modern like a bunch of buildings

SARAH ANNE JOHNSON
i decided to focus on Sarah Anne Johnson as i really like the random addition of bright colours to her work i like how it looks as if she had poured wax onto some parts or she has used coloured foil and made them look like the leaves on a tree i also like the fact she has made many of the things look like they are popping out of the image and i would like to create things that are similar. it also reminds me of glass
Rorschach test
The Rorschach test is a psychological test in which patients are shown images know as ink-blocks and what they describe it to be are what the doctor bases their psychological state is like. the test was named after the creator Hermann Rorschach and was most widely used in the 1960s however other doctors developed the idea further and changed some things about the test.
using the Rorschach test and Sarah Anne Johnson’s work i would like to incorporate the feelings that both of the things show such as in Johnson work she likes to use an image and

Making the inkblots
To make these inkblots I had some black ink and I used a small paintbrush to flick random bits onto the paper making sure not to use too much once it looked how I liked it to I folded the page and pushed it down making sure that it is on both sides once I was happy with how much I had pushed the ink around I pulled the paper apart to reveal the same print on both sides I did this multiple times making sure to change the way I put the ink or how much I smudged it to make a different pattern each time.

My first pieceThe process in which I created this is:
|
Creating more blotches
I created four different blotches and decided to cut them into half and make a different combination adding the half together to make new blotches I then decided to cut them all in half again giving me four pieces for each blotch after that I thought of every possibility of combinations to do and stuck them to a dark background making sure to switch sides each time. additionally I decided to pick random playing cards and write what cards I got on the back of each cut piece and got people to pick four cards allowing them to make different random combinations for images doing this a total of four times.
Adding landscapes
Once I had all my images I added them all onto my computer and got landscapes I had taken before adding one at a time into photoshop to them adding the landscape into the image I decided to play around with how much of the fuzziness of the test I wanted to show how much of it I wanted to be realistic.
Playing with colour
Once I had a few images in normal I decided I wanted to mess around with all the different colours of the background or make the trees a different colour so I decided to change the hue and saturation and changing the brightness of it all.
Whitening
Some of the image colours got lost as I was changing the inside colour it changed the outside colour so I had to go back and whiten some of the images I thought would look better whitened.
Final evaluation
The theme I have explored is constructed landscapes. My first thought of this theme were how are we going to do this? isn't there only one way we can do this? do people even know what this is or do anything with them? As I developed my work I saw that you can construct a landscape in so many different ways and some ways are really creative I would have never had thought of them before. As I went on with the work I began liking it more and more as I saw how you could construct a landscape. During this research I have looked at Dafna Talmor, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Liz Nielsen, Geraldo de Barros and Sarah Anne Johnson. I was looking at the Tallis photography website and looking through artists that construct landscapes and all of these artists caught my eye. I learnt from Dafna Talmor that you can add plain things to a landscape after cutting parts out of it it will still look like a landscape, for something to be a landscape doesn't mean it needs to show actual landscape. Hiroshi Sugimoto's work taught me that to be able to photograph a landscape it doesn't need to always be in focus an out of focus image can allow you to test your brain to see what it is. Sarah Anne Johnson work inspired me to take images I had taken and add random splashes of colour to the image even if it wouldn't be there because it actually does work. A threshold concept I used would be number 6 photographs rely on chance more or less. I used this when I was asking people to pick out cards to decide the order in which my images would. go where. The experiments I have carried out are using ink and painting with it and using photoshop to include my landscapes within my paintings. I began with creating ink blots I got some black ink and would flick some of the ink onto the paper making sure not to use too much to then folding the paper and smoothing the ink around as much as I saw fit into a random shape lastly pulling the paper apart to show my ink blot that I will use later on. While making them I made sure to change the direction I flick the ink and how much I used. Once I had four or five ink blots I waited for them to dry and then scanned them putting them onto my computer. Once all were on my computer I used photoshop adding the inkblots into it and a landscape image I took earlier in the project.I began with experiments and figuring out how to work photoshop I began going step by step adding my images inside of the inkblot. After I made a few I wanted to make it look more realistic and like I had just created it so I decided to mess around with the setting of the fuzziness of the image making it look like the paint was being lifted from the page. Once I made a few images like that I decided to start playing around with changing the colour of my landscape and as I was changing the colours of the image the outside of they inkblots was also being changed so I had to go back through and edit some backgrounds back to being white. Overtime my image began to come move into shape by having had played around more with changing the images slightly with their colours or trying to see what landscape image went well with my inkblots. On my website I have put on my process of how I made my images in photoshop but before that I put images of my landscapes on their own and my inkblots and have explained my thoughts on it. I also recorded all of my final pieces I made. My final project is a series of Rorschach blocks pasted with my landscape images around the area that I live. For my project i was hoping to create something that would make people look at my images and all see something different and try to figure out what it actually is. I wanted to create something that has multiple different meanings and makes people stare for a while. My project kind of works I think the ink blots were a little too messy and didn't really create an image looking like an actual image. I believe that I have explored them theme quite well as the landscapes I have included in my work are hidden in the background a little and many parts are cut off or distorted. If I had more time I would like to make a larger inkblot filling it with different parts of different landscapes or create a book of the ones I made already and more.My work is personal to me as it shows the area around me in which I grew up in and Rorschach blots are something I have been very interested in as I like to make my own little visions with ones I can't find. From my final outcome I hope people can understand that it doesn't have a specific story to it there isn't anything that it is meant to be just make up your own story or think what you want to think it is there are no wrong or right answer.
